Welcome to Grass Roots Lexington

Harry Forsdick
Welcome to Grass Roots Lexington. What are Grass Roots? The phrase "Grass Roots" is NOT just a modifier of the word politics -- Rather grass roots are those connections that just happen because you are there. They are not necessarily planned, organized, regulated, or controlled. They are the connections that become apparent after a while. In civic activities it means an activity that springs up because people want it and don't want to wait for someone else to do it.

[Currently I have reduced the number of headings to reflect only what I have kept up to date. But in addition to Lists and Groups, there are many other topics that could be on this website. Those topics are listed in the Additional Topics... ]
Over many years, I have come across a wide variety of people, organizations, services, facts, and stories that pertain to Lexington. Being generally interested in information and ways to understand, present and communicate information, I have decided to try to assemble and link together what I believe is the grass roots information about Lexington.
If there is anything I have learned in the past years, it is that people, organizations and the information about them changes over time and that no one person or organization can succeed alone in maintaining such a collection of information. Rather than create YAWAL (Yet Another Website About Lexington), I want to create a grass roots collaborative platform for assembling, categorizing and linking this information which can help a group of interested people can keep this record current and correct.
Something I learned from the Lexington List (which I founded in 2002) is that to be successful a new community based organization needs to have one person who is passionate about the idea of the organization. And so with Grass Roots Lexington, I feel strongly about this idea and will spend a significant time in the beginning to get it going. But like with the Lexington List, I expect that if this idea is a good one, that my involvement will dimish and if it is set up correctly it will become a self-sustaining force in Lexington. We'll see...
I consider myself a curator of information. Those of you who follow me on Facebook know that I read a lot and make recommendations of the things I read or find that excite, amuse, educate me. It is my plan to continue this curatorial habit with Grass Roots Lexington.
Regards,
